Born on November 11, 1959 in Denver, CO.  Gray began his broadcasting career in 1977 in Denver.

From 1981-87, and again from 2004-08, he was a reporter for ESPN SportsCenter. He also enjoyed tenures as a sports journalist at NBC (1987-90, 1994-2004) and CBS (1990-94). Gray began boxing broadcasting in 1979, working closed circuit telecasts for Top Rank (1979-87) and KingVision (1987-94). Since 1994, he has been part of the SHOWTIME Championship Boxing broadcast team, serving as interviewer and ringside reporter. Gray has also covered boxing during three Olympic Games. Among the boxing stars he covered include Hall of Famers George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran and Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

A veteran of over 700 championship bouts, his work has earned him many accolades including 12 National Emmy Awards, the 1997 National Sports Emmy for Journalism and Individual Achievement for his interview with Mike Tyson after his disqualification loss to Evander Holyfield. He was also named Sports Reporter of the Year by the American Sportscasters Association three times, Sports Broadcaster of the Year in 1997 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and USA Today named him Sports Television Reporter of the Year 12 times.
